What is the SchoolSpace + Gaggle Partnership?

SchoolSpace has partnered with Gaggle to provide machine learning chat moderation that helps schools keep students safe online.

Gaggle reviews student messages and identifies potential safety concerns—so your team can focus on supporting students instead of manually monitoring conversations.

This partnership supports SchoolSpace’s mission to create safe, trusted environments where students can connect and learn.

What Messages Are Covered?

Gaggle moderation applies to all student chat messaging within SchoolSpace, including:

  • 💬 Direct Messages (DMs)
  • 👥 Group Messages
  • 📢 Channel Messages

This ensures full coverage across all chat-based communication.

What Is NOT Covered?

  • 🎧 Voice and audio conversations
  • 🎥 Video interactions
  • 🙂 Emoji messages
  • 🅰 Single-letter messages sent consecutively

Gaggle moderation is limited to meaningful text-based chat only.

If you want to prevent an individual student from accessing Chat Channels or Direct Messaging, you can ban them from Chat Channels in a world or ban them from Direct Messaging in all your worlds.

How It Works

Gaggle combines their 24/7 machine learning system with trained human reviewers to monitor student chat and escalate concerns when needed.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Student chat messages are reviewed (DMs, groups, and channels)
  2. Gaggle flags potentially concerning content
  3. Human reviewers assess context
  4. Alerts are sent to your school if intervention may be needed

This allows schools to proactively support student well-being without constant manual oversight.

How Alerts Are Categorized

Gaggle prioritizes alerts based on urgency:

  • No Incident – No cause for concern
  • ⚠️ Questionable Content (QCON) – May require awareness or follow-up
  • 🚨 Possible Student Situation (PSS) – Urgent concern requiring immediate attention

What Types of Content Are Flagged?

Gaggle looks for patterns in student chat that may indicate safety concerns, including:

  • Self-harm or suicide concerns
  • Bullying or harassment
  • Violence or threats
  • Drug or alcohol-related content
  • Sexual abuse/grooming

Examples of Flagged Content

Gaggle reviews messages in context to determine if action may be needed. Examples include:

Self-harm / Suicide

  • “I don’t want to be here anymore. I’m thinking about ending my life tonight.”
  • “I’ve been struggling with depression and don’t know what to do.”

Violence or Threats

  • “I will come to your house and hurt you.”
  • “Someone brought a weapon to school.”

Bullying / Harassment

  • “I’ve been bullied every day and I can’t take it anymore.”
  • Repeated targeted harassment toward another student

Drugs & Alcohol

  • “I took a bunch of pills and feel really sick.”
  • “We’re bringing alcohol to the game tonight.”

Sexual or Inappropriate Content

  • “I’m meeting someone much older for something private.”

Gaggle uses both machine learning and human review to understand context, so not all keywords automatically trigger alerts. Academic discussions or harmless comments are typically not flagged.
