What are Layers?

Layers create depth and make a world seem more visually interesting. Every asset can be a top layer or bottom layer. Alternatively, assets can contain both a top and bottom layer.

  • Top Layer: The asset can be in front (on top) of an avatar.
  • Bottom Layer: The asset is always behind an avatar.

The asset can appear on top of an avatar.
This is a Bottom Layer asset. The asset always appears behind an avatar.

When you upload a custom asset, you choose an image to upload as a top or bottom layer. You can upload images for both a top and a bottom layer and these images will appear together as a single asset in the world. Or you can choose to upload a single image file as a top or a bottom layer, depending on your needs.

Changing Layering

After placing assets, you might notice an asset appears behind another asset (like a custom text asset appearing behind a sign). To fix this you can change the asset's layering to make it appear correctly in the world.

To Change an Asset's Layering:
  1. Click Builder Mode builder in the left sidebar or press B on your keyboard to enter Builder Mode.
  2. Select the asset whose layering you want to change. To select the asset, either:
  3. In the Asset Selection menu on the right side of your screen, click Configuration  → Layers.
  4. Adjust the layering:
    • Display Layer: Choose top layer or bottom layer. For assets with a single layer, change this setting to switch the asset between a top layer or bottom layer asset.
    • Modify Top Layer: Bring the top layer of an asset forwards or send it backwards. This will change the order the asset appears in the world. The Top Layer value can be negative.
    • Modify Bottom Layer: Choose 'Move to Back' to send this asset behind all other bottom layer assets or 'Bring to Front' to bring the asset to the front of all other bottom layer assets.

  5. After making your changes, click Clear Selection in the upper right corner of the Asset Selection menu.
  6. Test your layering! Click Builder Mode builder in the left sidebar or press B on your keyboard to exit Builder Mode. Move your avatar to the asset you just edited and check if the asset appears as expected. If necessary, repeat the steps above to achieve the layering you desire.

Tips for Layering

  • If you're having trouble getting a bottom layer asset to appear in the correct order, you can change the asset to a top layer asset and enter -1000 (or another large negative number) when modifying the top layer. This will cause the asset to appear behind the avatar and in front of any nearby bottom layer assets.
  • If your avatar walks behind a top layer asset sooner than you'd like, modify the top layer and send it backwards until the asset and avatar appear as desired.
