What is Gallery Mode?
Typically, SchoolSpace uses proximity connection where you see and hear people when you're near each other in the world. Gallery Mode is a moderator-controlled presentation mode that switches the entire world from proximity video chat into a structured presenter + participants experience.
Gallery Mode is great for:
- Teaching a class.
- Presentations.
- Lectures.
- Panels.
- Large group moments where proximity video chat is not appropriate.

Gallery Mode for Participants
By default, all students and non-admins will join Gallery Mode as participants. Participant microphones cannot be unmuted. To speak, an admin will need to make you a presenter.
When an admin starts Gallery Mode:
- Your screen will change to Gallery Mode and the world will not be visible.
- Your microphone will be muted. You can raise your hand to indicate you want to speak.
- An admin might make you a presenter so you can unmute and/or share your screen.
- You can switch between Gallery View and Presenter View.
- You can use emotes.
To Raise your Hand:
- In the Gallery Mode toolbar at the bottom of your screen, click Raise Hand
.

- Your name on your video tile will turn green and you will be added to the Raised Hands Queue in the Users Menu.

- Wait for an admin to make you a presenter. Once you've been added as a presenter, you can unmute and speak.
- To lower your hand, click Lower Hand
in the Gallery Mode toolbar at the bottom of your screen.
If you do not see an option to raise your hand in the Gallery Mode toolbar, this feature might be disabled in the world. An admin can change the Raise Hand settings to allow you to raise your hand.
To Switch Views:
- In the Gallery Mode toolbar at the bottom of your screen, select either Gallery View
or Presenter View

- Gallery View
Up to 20 tiles are show per page, depending on your screen size.Presenters are shown in the top row. This is the default view when there are 5 or more people in the world when Gallery Mode starts.

- Presenter View
All presenters have large video tiles. All gallery members have small video tiles shown vertically on the right side of the screen. This is the default view if there are less than 5 people in the world when Gallery Mode starts.

- Gallery View
- Switching views only affects your view.
To Emote while in Gallery Mode:
- In the Gallery Mode toolbar at the bottom of your screen, click Emotes
.

- Scroll to find the emote you want and click to select. Your emote will be visible to everyone

To close the Emote list, click Emotes
in the Gallery Mode toolbar at the bottom of your screen.
To Unmute:
In order to unmute while in Gallery Mode, an admin will need to make you a presenter.
- In the Gallery Mode toolbar at the bottom of your screen, click Unmute
.

- Everyone will be able to hear you. To mute again, click Mute
in the Gallery Mode toolbar at the bottom of your screen.
To Share your Screen:
In order to share your screen while in Gallery Mode, an admin will need to make you a presenter.
- In the Gallery Mode toolbar at the bottom of your screen, click Share Screen
.

- Choose tab, window, or share your entire screen.
- If you want to share page audio, choose a tab and toggle 'Share tab audio' on.
- If you want to switch between multiple browser tabs, choose window.
- If you want to switch between multiple browser or app windows, choose entire screen
- To stop sharing your screen, click Turn off Screen Share
in the Gallery Mode toolbar at the bottom of your screen.
If you are not able to share your screen, an admin may need to update the Screenshare Access settings.
Gallery Mode for Admins
Only Moderators, Managers, and world Owners can start or end Gallery Mode. When an admin starts Gallery Mode, everyone's screen will change from proximity video chat in the world to the structured presenter + participants Gallery Mode experience.
Admins can:
Gallery Mode is an additional feature that can be added to your SchoolSpace worlds by reaching out to support@schoolspace.io.
To Start Gallery Mode:
- Click Gallery Mode
at the bottom of the left sidebar.

- A popup will appear asking you to confirm your choice. Select:
- Turn On for Everyone to start Gallery Mode.
- Cancel to keep the world in proximity based video chat.

- A 5-second countdown is shown to everyone before Gallery Mode starts. As the admin who is starting Gallery Mode, you have the option to Cancel. Cancelling ends the switch to Gallery Mode and keeps the world in proximity video chat.

- The admin who started Gallery Mode automatically joins as a presenter. Everyone else joins as participants. Anyone who enters the world while Gallery Mode is active will also join as a participant.
- While in Gallery Mode, admins can:
- Promote or remove presenters.
- Record the session.
- Switch between Gallery View and Presenter View.
- Unmute (as a presenter).
- Share your screen (as a presenter).
- Emote.
To End Gallery Mode:
- In the Gallery Mode toolbar at the bottom of your screen, click the 'End for All' button.

- A popup will appear asking you to confirm your choice. Select:
- End for All to return everyone to proximity video chat.
- Cancel to stay in Gallery Mode.

- A 5-second countdown is shown to everyone before Gallery Mode ends. As the admin who is ending Gallery Mode, you have the option to Cancel. Cancelling keeps everyone in Gallery Mode.

- When Gallery Mode ends, everyone is placed in the location where they last were before Gallery Mode was started.
To Promote or Remove a Presenter:
- Click Add Presenter
or Remove Presenter
in either:
- Their video tile.

- Under their name in the Current Users tab of the Users Menu.

- After promoting a presenter, their video tile will move to the Presenters section. They will be able to unmute and share their screen.
- After removing a presenter, their video tile will move to the Participants section. Their mic will be muted and they will not be able to share their screen.
- There can be up to 12 presenters at the same time. There must always be at least one presenter. By default, the admin who starts Gallery Mode is added as a presenter.
To Record while in Gallery Mode:
- In the Gallery Mode toolbar at the bottom of your screen, click Start Recording
.

- Everyone will see a notification when the recording starts. A Recording indicator will also be shown in the upper left corner of everyone's screen.
- To end the recording: Click Stop Recording
in the Gallery Mode toolbar at the bottom of your screen. Recordings are available in the SchoolSpace Dashboard.
In Gallery Mode, only presenters' video streams are recorded. If any students or non-admins are presenters, their display name and audio will be included but their videos will be excluded from the recording.
