### What is Gallery Mode?

Typically, SchoolSpace uses [proximity connection](https://support.schoolspace.io/video-chat#walk-to-start-conversation) where you see and hear people when you're near each other in the world. Gallery Mode is a moderator-controlled presentation mode that switches the entire world from proximity video chat into a structured presenter + participants experience.

##### Gallery Mode is great for:

- Teaching a class.
- Presentations.
- Lectures.
- Panels.
- Large group moments where proximity video chat is not appropriate.

### Gallery Mode for Participants

By default, all students and non-admins will join Gallery Mode as participants. Participant microphones cannot be unmuted. To speak, an admin will need to make you a presenter.

##### When an admin starts Gallery Mode:

- Your screen will change to Gallery Mode and the world will not be visible.
- Your microphone will be muted. You can [raise your hand](https://support.schoolspace.io/gallery-mode#raise-hand) to indicate you want to speak.
- An admin might [make you a presenter](https://support.schoolspace.io/gallery-mode#presenter) so you can [unmute](https://support.schoolspace.io/gallery-mode#unmute) and/or [share your screen](https://support.schoolspace.io/gallery-mode#screenshare).
- You can [switch between Gallery View and Presenter View](https://support.schoolspace.io/gallery-mode#switch-views).
- You can [use emotes](https://support.schoolspace.io/gallery-mode#emote).

 

##### To Raise your Hand:

1. In the Gallery Mode toolbar at the bottom of your screen, click **Raise Hand** ![pan](https://support.schoolspace.io/hubfs/Latest%20UI%20Icons%20-%202025/pan.svg)**.**

2. Your name on your video tile will turn green and you will be added to the Raised Hands Queue in the Users Menu.

3. Wait for an admin to make you a presenter. Once you've been added as a presenter, you can unmute and speak.
4. To lower your hand, click **Lower Hand** ![pan](https://support.schoolspace.io/hubfs/Latest%20UI%20Icons%20-%202025/pan.svg) in the Gallery Mode toolbar at the bottom of your screen.

If you do not see an option to raise your hand in the Gallery Mode toolbar, this feature might be disabled in the world. An admin can change the Raise Hand settings to allow you to raise your hand.

 

##### To Switch Views:

1. In the Gallery Mode toolbar at the bottom of your screen, select either **Gallery View** ![galleryView](https://support.schoolspace.io/hubfs/Latest%20UI%20Icons%20-%202025/galleryView.svg) or **Presenter View** ![presenterView](https://support.schoolspace.io/hubfs/Latest%20UI%20Icons%20-%202025/presenterView.svg)

##### To Emote while in Gallery Mode:

1. In the Gallery Mode toolbar at the bottom of your screen, click **Emotes ![expression](https://support.schoolspace.io/hubfs/Latest%20UI%20Icons%20-%202025/expression.svg).**

2. Scroll to find the emote you want and click to select. Your emote will be visible to everyone

##### To Unmute:

*In order to unmute while in Gallery Mode, an admin will need to make you a presenter.*

1. In the Gallery Mode toolbar at the bottom of your screen, click **Unmute ![micOff](https://support.schoolspace.io/hubfs/Latest%20UI%20Icons%20-%202025/micOff.svg).**

##### To Share your Screen:

*In order to share your screen while in Gallery Mode, an admin will need to make you a presenter.*

1. In the Gallery Mode toolbar at the bottom of your screen, click **Share Screen ![screenshare](https://support.schoolspace.io/hubfs/Latest%20UI%20Icons%20-%202025/screenshare.svg).**

2. Choose **tab, window,** or **share your entire screen.** 
     - If you want to share page audio, choose a tab and toggle 'Share tab audio' on.
     - If you want to switch between multiple browser tabs, choose window.
     - If you want to switch between multiple browser or app windows, choose entire screen
3. To stop sharing your screen, click **Turn off Screen Share** ![screenshare](https://support.schoolspace.io/hubfs/Latest%20UI%20Icons%20-%202025/screenshare.svg) in the Gallery Mode toolbar at the bottom of your screen.

If you are not able to share your screen, an admin may need to [update the Screenshare Access settings](https://support.schoolspace.io/screenshare-access#update-screenshare-access).

### Gallery Mode for Admins

Only Moderators, Managers, and world Owners can start or end Gallery Mode. When an admin starts Gallery Mode, everyone's screen will change from proximity video chat in the world to the structured presenter + participants Gallery Mode experience.

##### Admins can:

- [Start Gallery Mode](https://support.schoolspace.io/gallery-mode#enable).
- [End Gallery Mode](https://support.schoolspace.io/gallery-mode#disable).
- [Add or remove presenters](https://support.schoolspace.io/gallery-mode#presenter).
- [Record the session](https://support.schoolspace.io/gallery-mode#record).
- Choose whether student video is included in recordings.

##### To Start Gallery Mode:

1. Click **Gallery Mode** ![galleryMode](https://support.schoolspace.io/hubfs/Latest%20UI%20Icons%20-%202025/galleryMode.svg) at the bottom of the left sidebar.

2. A popup will appear asking you to confirm your choice. Select: 
     - **Turn On for Everyone** to start Gallery Mode.
     - **Cancel** to keep the world in proximity based video chat.

3. A 5-second countdown is shown to everyone before Gallery Mode starts. As the admin who is starting Gallery Mode, you have the option to **Cancel.** Cancelling ends the switch to Gallery Mode and keeps the world in proximity video chat.

4. The admin who started Gallery Mode automatically joins as a presenter. Everyone else joins as participants. Anyone who enters the world while Gallery Mode is active will also join as a participant.

##### To End Gallery Mode:

1. In the Gallery Mode toolbar at the bottom of your screen, click the **'End for All' button.**

     - **End for All** to return everyone to proximity video chat.
     - **Cancel** to stay in Gallery Mode.

4. When Gallery Mode ends, everyone is placed in the location where they last were before Gallery Mode was started.

 

##### To Promote or Remove a Presenter:

1. Click **Add Presenter** ![presenterActive](https://support.schoolspace.io/hubfs/Latest%20UI%20Icons%20-%202025/presenterActive.svg) or **Remove Presenter** ![presenterInactive](https://support.schoolspace.io/hubfs/Latest%20UI%20Icons%20-%202025/presenterInactive.svg) in either: 
     - Their **video tile.**

2. **After promoting** a presenter, their video tile will move to the Presenters section. They will be able to [unmute](https://support.schoolspace.io/gallery-mode#unmute) and [share their screen](https://support.schoolspace.io/gallery-mode#screenshare).
3. **After removing** a presenter, their video tile will move to the Participants section. Their mic will be muted and they will not be able to share their screen.
4. There can be up to 12 presenters at the same time. There must always be at least one presenter. By default, the admin who starts Gallery Mode is added as a presenter.

 

##### To Record while in Gallery Mode:

1. In the Gallery Mode toolbar at the bottom of your screen, click **Start Recording** ![record](https://support.schoolspace.io/hubfs/Latest%20UI%20Icons%20-%202025/record.svg)**.**

2. Everyone will see a notification when the recording starts. A Recording indicator will also be shown in the upper left corner of everyone's screen.
3. **To end the recording:** Click **Stop Recording** ![record](https://support.schoolspace.io/hubfs/Latest%20UI%20Icons%20-%202025/record.svg) in the Gallery Mode toolbar at the bottom of your screen. [Recordings](https://support.schoolspace.io/understanding-the-schoolspace-dashboard#recordings) are available in the SchoolSpace Dashboard.

In Gallery Mode, only presenters' video streams are recorded. If any students or non-admins are presenters, their display name and audio are included, and their video is excluded unless a Manager has turned on [**Include non-admin webcams in Gallery Mode recordings**.](https://support.schoolspace.io/gallery-mode#include-non-admin-recordings)

 

##### To Include Student Video in Gallery Mode Recordings:

By default, student and non-admin webcams are excluded from Gallery Mode recordings. Managers can turn this off so that student video is captured along with the presenters'.

1. Click ![App - Settings](https://support.schoolspace.io/hubfs/App%20-%20Settings.svg) **World Settings** in the left sidebar.
2. Select the **General User Controls** tab.
3. Under **Recording**, toggle on **Include non-admin webcams in Gallery Mode recordings.**
4. **Read and confirm the acknowledgment** that appears. This is a one-time confirmation that you've checked your school or district's rules on recording students and that you have the consent you need.

Changing this setting does not affect a recording already in progress. The change applies to your next recording.
