Add Video or Audio

YouTube, Vimeo, MP4s and More!

This article shows you how to add video or audio to your SchoolSpace world. Whether you're linking a YouTube video, uploading an MP4, or setting up background music, you'll learn the difference between auto-playing “spatial” media and “click-to-play” options, and how to control volume, sync, and more.

Bring your SchoolSpace World to Life with Video and Audio

Make your SchoolSpace world more immersive by adding sound or video. Need some inspiration? Check out these examples:

  • Play a calming sound when students enter a zen garden space
  • Add a recording of school announcements near a virtual bulletin board
  • Let students click to watch a class video at their own pace

You can link to media from YouTube, Vimeo, Twitch, Dropbox, and more. SchoolSpace also supports uploading your own mp4 files or adding your own livestream.

Linked Media

There are two types of linked media on SchoolSpace:

  • Spatial Video or Audio will start playing automatically when someone’s avatar gets close to it. Think of it like walking past a speaker in real life - you hear it when you're nearby and it fades out as you walk away.
  • Click-to-Place Media doesn’t start automatically. It appears as a clickable asset and the media plays when a user clicks.

You'll find a breakdown of supported media sources and how to find the correct link to use in SchoolSpace below.

To Add Spatial Video or Audio:
  1. Find or place the asset that will contain the media:
    • To find an existing Asset: Walk to the asset or click Assets assets on the left sidebar and search the Placed Assets list.
    • To place a new Asset: Click Assets assets on the left sidebar. Click the Placed Assets dropdown and change to SchoolSpace Assets. Scroll or search for an asset to use.
  2. Select the Asset you want to use:
    • If you walked to the asset or placed a new asset, click Builder Mode builder in the left sidebar, then click the asset to select.
    • If you searched Placed Assets, simply click on the asset in the list.
  3. In the Selection menu on the right side of your browser, click Configuration → Media.
  4. In the Media Type dropdown, choose Video (Link) or Audio (Link).
    • Use Audio (Link) if you only want the audio to play. Example: A link to a YouTube video of forest sounds will only play the audio if Audio (Link) is selected.
  5. In the Link Settings section under Video Link, paste the URL for the media. See the Supported Media guide below for assistance.
  6. [Optional] Add a Video Title. The title will be visible to users under the media.
  7. Make adjustments as needed:
    • Adjust Volume. Use the slider or number field to increase or decrease the playback volume.
    • Choose playback Radius. This is how close the user needs to be in order for the media to play. Click the dropdown and select:
      • Close: Media will play when the user is next to the asset.
      • Medium: Media will play when the user is near the asset.
      • Far: Media will play when the user is further away.
      • Everywhere: Media will play regardless of how close the user is to the asset.
    • Toggle on Sync Media to make the media play from the same timestamp for all users who approach the asset. Note: this option is only available for YouTube links.
  8. To test your media, click Builder Mode builder on the left sidebar or press B on your keyboard to exit Builder Mode. If needed, walk to the asset so the media starts playing. You can always choose a different Radius if you want the change the distance needed to trigger the media.

When Sync Media is toggled on, if one user triggers the media to play and other users walk up later or the first person walks away and comes back, the media will start from the same timestamp. This is great for announcements or group videos.

To Remove Spatial Video or Audio:
  1. Click Builder Mode builder in the left sidebar or press B on your keyboard.
  2. Click the asset to open the Selection menu.
  3. Click Configuration → Media.
  4. In the Media Type dropdown, choose None.
  5. If you want to remove the asset itself you will need to delete the asset.

To Add Click-to-Play Media:
  3. In the Selection menu on the right side of your browser, click Configuration → Links.
  4. In the Link Type dropdown, choose Add a website, game, tool, or email.
  5. Under Links, click the blue plus plus button to open the Add a link page.
  6. To get your media URL:
  7. Enter link information:
    • [Optional] Add a Title. The title will be visible to users when they click on the asset.
    • [Required] Paste the edited URL into the Link field.
    • Choose Link Behavior:
      • Open in modal iframe: opens inside a pop-up in the world. Recommended for video content.
      • Open in Drawer iframe: slides out from the left side.
      • Open in new tab: opens the link in a new browser tab (best if iframe doesn't work).
  8. Click Add Link to save.
  9. To test your media, click Builder Mode builder on the left sidebar or press B on your keyboard to exit Builder Mode. Then click the asset to open the media.
Tips:
  • Label clearly! Add a text asset or use an image that signals “Watch Video” or “Click to View.”
  • Make sure your video link source supports iframe embedding (like YouTube or Vimeo). If the site blocks iframe use, the video may not play from a modal or drawer iframe in SchoolSpace.

To Remove Click-to-Play Media:
  1. Click Builder Mode builder in the left sidebar or press B on your keyboard.
  2. Click the asset to open the Selection menu.
  3. Click Configuration → Links.
  4. To keep the asset and remove the attached media you can either hide the media and save the link for future use or delete the link permanently:
    • To Hide: In the Link Type dropdown, choose None. This will hide all links attached to the asset.
    • To Delete: In the Links section, click Delete Link trash under the link you want to remove.
  5. If you want to remove the asset itself you will need to delete the asset.

How Do I Find an Embed Code?

For Click-to-Play media, you will typically need to get the URL from the media's embed </> code. Embed is typically an option in the media's share tool. If you're having trouble finding the embed code we recommend using a search engine with the name of the media source and 'how to find embed code' (i.e "how do I find an embed code for a YouTube video?").

Once you've found the embed code, we recommend copying and pasting the embed code into a separate note or doc so you can easy copy the URL portion and modify as needed before adding it to SchoolSpace.

Here are some example embed codes with the URL in bold:

YouTube <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Wfoy_OvNDvw?si=kBkyKn44kBpoU5Cs" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Vimeo <iframe title="vimeo-player" src="https://player.vimeo.com/video/1094815419?h=05f8bbd847" width="640" height="360" frameborder="0" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allow="autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; web-share"   allowfullscreen></iframe
